Brussels - June 27 - 29, 2010

We took a bus from the Hague to Brussels, Belgium on Sunday, June 27th. Our hotel was not in very interesting part of the city, but nothing terrible. We took an interesting tour of the city - the Gran Plaz is incredible.

This little boy supposedly saved Brussels by peeing on a fire. He was rewarded with a statue. He has more clothes than I do and a person whose job it is to dress him at different times.

I had Belgian waffles, Belgian chocolate and excellent french fries - apparently originated in Belgium. The best part of the area our hotel was in was the fact that, partially because of the large Muslim population in the area, we could find cheap gyros.

Brussels is also known for comics - the have them painted on walls all over the city.

All over the world, there are things that, for some reason or another, have become good luck or wish-granting. I figure it sure can't hurt. This particular guy is supposed to give good luck, touch the little angel's nose above him to find true love, and the little mouse below him to have great sex. You can tell how popular he has become by the color differences between the lucky places and the rest of the statue.

After classes on Monday, a group of us went wandering in the city. The most interesting thing we saw is Atomium - a huge water crystal molecule from the 1958 Worlds Fair. It was designed to be a symbolic representation of the peaceful use of atomic power for scientific purposes. We didn't go up into it, but it is supposed to have great views.

I love signs around the world - often they are really funny because of translation problems. This one is funny because it looks like the hand of god is going to come steal your car. Beware!

We visited the Commission of the EU. This is a picture (which you really can't see) of a sign that shows all the countries that are part of the EU and when they joined. My European geography is improving!

Brussels was not my favorite stop of our trip, but it was still interesting. Tuesday was a very long day - after classes and our visit, we got on the bus and headed to Luxembourg...
